Preventing Microsoft Access Corruption. Here is What You Can Do!

If you feel that your MS-Access Database may get corrupt, it is essential to know what you can do to avoid such a database to avoid corruption. You can stop Microsoft Access Corrupt state and action. These preventive measures will reduce the risk, and if is already corrupted, there are options for recovery. However, here are some ways to prevent database corruption.

1# Don’t Leave Your Database Open

Whenever the access database is opened, there is a backup copy of the data that is created by the backup. When the operation starts executing on own, it can lead to corruption of the database. It is best to keep the application closed when it is not in use to prevent database corruption.

2# Split the Database

Instead of maintaining an extensive database in a single MDB file and sharing the same, it is best to break the database into front-end forms, reports, queries, and other data access pages. These back-end tables contain the data. Maintain a copy of the front-end database on each user machine’s local hard-disk and link them to the server. It also means that only a small quantity of data travels across the network and gets exposed to corruption. It also enhances the database’s speed and allows you to make the design changes to the front-end while using the live data.

3# Only Use Good Network Cards

The quality of network cards affects the data movement. It is best to move the well-known brands of network cards. With all the network equipment, it is best to match the manufacturers of all the NICs. It is best to use the hub or switches from the same manufacturer to avoid complications arising out of different brand products.

4# Have You Updated the Device Drivers Recently?

Device drivers are often not well written. New versions keep coming to fix the ineffectiveness of the older ones. So, it is best to keep them as updated as possible. Most PC makers don’t pay the required attention to the device drivers. In fact, many crashes are due to poorly written drivers as they are updated quickly, so it is best that you do periodic checks to see if the updates have been released.

5# Is the Anti-Virus Software Causing Trouble?

Some anti-virus applications have also been considered as a cause of corruption in the Access files. If you have a real-time monitor on the network, you should disable scanning the MDB files. Keep in mind that virus writers tend to hide malicious code in the Access files, so it is best to scan anything that comes in the network before allowing the users for it.

6# Have You Used Repair Utility?

Access files don’t get small even after the data is deleted. Unless you compact them, the file remains large and may lead to packet loss and other corruption causes over a network. If there is any data in the database, set it to ‘compact and close’ from the Options menu. If you have split the data in the backend, compact it regularly. You can use the VBA code, so you could set it to happen at a particular time.

7# Close the Database When Not in Use

Most backup software will backup the Access database even if it is open. However, Microsoft Access corrupt state is due to this reason as well. So, get your users to close their applications even during lunch hours.

Finally,

You can prevent corruption in Access using these tips and ideas. However, ensure that you are following them regularly.
